Recent insights from NYU’s Public Relations and Corporate Communication Program reveal the seven skills that separate successful PR graduates from the 6% of 21–24-year-olds facing unemployment.  

A conversation hosted by PRophet Founder and Global CEO Aaron Kwittken, featuring NYU Academic Director Stephanie Mattera and M.S. candidate Gabriella Lynch, revealed the seven core skills today’s graduates must bring to the table. 

The New Reality 

The statistics tell a stark story. We’ve entered what many call a “post-literate world” where traditional long-form communication has given way to video, memes and rapid-fire posts. Meanwhile, AI has fundamentally altered how we create, distribute and measure communications.  

Graduates who thrive won’t be those with perfect GPAs alone. They’ll be the ones who master a hybrid skill set that bridges traditional PR expertise with AI-powered capabilities. 

1. Human-AI Collaboration 

Graduates must go beyond typing prompts into ChatGPT—they need to learn how to engage with AI like a creative partner. “Prompting is huge,” said Mata, pointing to research showing that high-quality prompts can improve output by 50%. Lynch added, “AI gives you B+ work, but with human strategy, you can turn that into A+.” 

2. Industry Agility 

PR isn’t about being a specialist anymore. It’s about decoding new industries quickly. “That jargon is something I wish I would have known,” said Lynch about breaking into hospitality. Agility in language and mindset is now essential. 

3. Data-Driven Storytelling 

PR success today is measured by ROI, not impressions. Mata and Lynch emphasized the need for data visualization, statistics, and critical thinking. PR pros must translate data into stories that drive decisions and measurable impact. 

4. Authentic Relationship Building 

Digital skills matter, but face-to-face engagement is still critical. “Even though we’re in Cannes, there’s a lot of New Yorkers here,” Mata joked, noting how small the global network really is. Lynch agreed: “Meeting people in person gave me a real edge.” 

5. Crisis Adaptability 

Many crises follow recognizable patterns. Mata said, “If you can nail those down, you can prevent escalation.” Graduates must move from reactive PR to predictive strategies, using pattern recognition and pre-crisis planning. 

6. Cross-Platform Storytelling 

Communicators need to tailor stories across platforms—LinkedIn, TikTok, press releases, and Instagram—without losing authenticity. Mastering content variation while maintaining a consistent voice is essential in a post-literate world. 

7. Strategic Thinking 

Finally, graduates must understand the “why” behind tactics. Strategy ties every other skill together—knowing when to pivot, how to measure success, and how to align communication with business goals.

These skills aren’t siloed—they must work together. The most successful PR pros will blend AI with human insight, traditional PR foundations with tech-forward tools, and creativity with data fluency.
